maybe you look the part.. or maybe its the accent *shrug i would think people would automatically think you were from puerto rico since there are some many in the u.s
Yes, you have a point which begs the question for English speakers; why when I have gone to Colombia and Mexico and people heard me speaking English (or Spanish) there, did they all assume I was American? There are many English speaking countries in the world also.
Us Spanish speakers can tell what Spanish speaking country and region someone is by their accent.
The Castellano of Argentina stands out and is different from the horrible Mexican and the real Castellano of Spain.
This is difficult for Non-Spanish speakers. Besides Americans don’t get out much or study other countries culture so…. They don’t know squat about Argentina or Latin-America. Americans only know what is in their backyards and neighborhoods which is Mexicans so you can’t blame them err us.
Because mostly when people meet someone that speaks Spanish they are from Mexico so when they meet someone like you they have the tendency to ask if you are Mexican.

Speak Spanish
I recently heard on CNN that two-thirds of Hispanics in America are from Mexico.
That said, I think the assumptions come from that, and it depends on the region you are in. South Florida tends to have more Cubans.
New York and New Jersey… more Puerto Ricans and Dominicans.
Texas through California… Mexican.

Hello,
Yes, you have a point which begs the question for English speakers; why when I have gone to Colombia and Mexico and people heard me speaking English (or Spanish) there, did they all assume I was American? There are many English speaking countries in the world also.

Is it that annoying? I mean it’s the safest guess they are right across the border. I am from Texas so almost all the hispanics I know are Mexican.
