If the job requires speaking Spanish, because there are often Spanish speaking customers, then yes, they can turn you down.

They can have any job requirements they want.
It’s not discrimination because it’s a required skill, not a race/gender, etc. thing.

If the requirement for the job is that you be bilingual then of course she didn’t give you an application. Why would you want to waste your time if you don’t have the qualifications for the job?
Obviously the store has enough Spanish-speaking customers to need bilingual sales staff. Just look for a job at a different store.

Unless the ad specifically states that you must speak Spanish or some other qualification, thens its illegal to hold it against you, but now here would be your problem, without any witnesses to hear this lady say this, its your word against hers which wouldnt hold up in court. So theres not much legally you can do here. sorry

Arthur W is right.
Furthermore, the ad says they will teach you any required skills. You can use that against them, and say it is false, since they are not willing to teach you how to speak Spanish.
It is not a Spanish store, so ***? I would even bring it to the attention of the news.
What store is it, and where?

Unfortunately, it’s legal.
While I do believe it is admirable and beneficial to know more than one language, I also think it’s getting pretty ridiculous to expect every American to start speaking Spanish.

Yes it is, so long as the owners can justify a “must speak Spanish” rule as a bona-fide occupational requirement.
Since many of their customers are no doubt Spanish speaking, it’s legal for them to require that someone in sales be able to speak with them.

Create a video blog…instantly.
if a large enough percentage of the customers speak spanish, then that seems a reasonable job requirement.
it is not like they said you can’t have the job because you are not mexican, only because you don’t speak spanish.
